 Salem was founded in 1802.  The city is well known throughout the country as the home to numerous NCAA Division II and Division III national championships thanks to its top-notch sporting venues like the Salem Civic Center and Moyer Complex. Salem is home to Roanoke College, a private school that often features well-known public speakers. Salem is also home to the Salem Red Sox, a Carolina League (Single A) affiliate of the Boston Red Sox.
