Goodlatte: President Obama Again Unilaterally Ignores Immigration Laws
WASHINGTON, D.C. – House Judiciary Committee Chairman Bob Goodlatte issued the statement below following the Obama Administration’s policy directive to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement mandating prosecutorial discretion for illegal immigrants who are the primary caretakers of minor children regardless of the child’s status; parents and legal guardians who have a direct interest in a family court proceeding involving a minor, or child welfare proceedings in the United States; and parents or legal guardians whose minor children are U.S. citizens or lawful permanent residents.
“President Obama has once again abused his authority and unilaterally refused to enforce our current immigration laws by directing U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents to stop removing broad categories of unlawful immigrants. The primary reason why our immigration system is broken today is because our immigration laws have largely been ignored by past and present administrations. It’s imperative that we prevent this from happening again by taking away the enforcement ‘on/off’ switch from the President. That’s why the House Judiciary Committee approved the SAFE Act, which prevents the Executive Branch from unilaterally turning off immigration enforcement by granting states and local governments the authority to enforce federal immigration laws.
“This new directive from the Obama Administration also poisons the debate surrounding immigration reform and shows that the Administration is not serious about fixing our broken immigration system. Instead of working with Congress to address problems with our immigration system, the President is working against us. The House is working hard to improve our immigration system through a step-by-step approach but this Administration continues to politicize the issue and undermine our efforts by refusing to enforce our current laws. President Obama’s disregard for the rule of law only encourages more illegal immigration.”
