Tonight, the U.S. House of Representatives approved H.R. 5247, the Trickett Wendler, Frank Mongiello, Jordan McLinn, and Matthew Bellina Right to Try Act of 2018. Congressman Bob Goodlatte (R-Va.) released the following statement after voting in support of H.R. 5247:

“Millions of Americans are diagnosed with a terminal illness each year, and it is heartbreaking to watch loved ones suffer when potential treatments exist, but are not available to them. For those not accepted into clinical trials or granted an exemption to use the treatment, many will miss the opportunity to try new drugs and therapies due to a lengthy approval process. The bipartisan Right to Try Act restores hope for these patients by granting access to medications that have passed basic safety testing by the Food and Drug Administration but are not yet available to the general public. With this legislation, those with serious illness will be able to access potentially life-saving treatments. Many states have already enacted a version of this bill, and it’s time that the federal government did the same.”
